My goal this summer has been to teach myself how to sew. So far it is going pretty well. I have purchased every recent sewing book i can get my hands on. So if you are not one who has given in to the machine yet and want to learn, here is my own book review and a few of my humble projects. Books are reviewed in the order i purchased them.
In Stitches - Amy Butler-This was the first book i bought, great book but far to advanced for a beginner. Definitely something you should have once you get the basics down.
Sew Easy - Linda Lee- A compact kit book with a cute pink cover. This book has a short (read non extensive) guide book and idea cards. The information in the book was short and sweet. Not enough explanation for me and i found the diagrams confusing. The projects on the cards were not really my style.
Simple Sewing - Lotta Jansdotter-Unless you have been under a rock you have heard about this book. Finally a light went on for me. This book has projects that are not overwhelming for a beginner like me and does a great job of explaining each step of the project's process. I also like how she rates the difficulty of each project so you know what you are in for. This book is a must have in my opinion.
Simple Sewing with a French Twist - Celine Dupuy- The book is two-fold. Although i felt like the projects in this book are a little out of my league, the introduction section of the book has an extensive amount of information on the basics of sewing. Lots of detailed instructions with great diagrams. This book really helped me get a grip on seeing the basic in action.
Bend the Rules Sewing - Amy Karol - I got this book last week. Hooray for Amy. This book is like having your best friend who sews really well at your house. I like Amy's honesty, yes you will screw up and have to start over but it is ok. She also says to just get in there and try and I think this is what i needed to hear. The sewing knowledge and information she provides are invaluable. I am a little intimidated by the project but with Amy's book in your corner, you sewing confidence is sure to grow. I will be carrying this book around with me for a while. A must have in my opinion.
Now for the humble projects:
a tote bag with crazy short handles.
Yeah, the handles aren't even attached here but are too short for me. Speaking of handles, does anyone have a source for those leather handles that can be sewn onto bags and totes that you see so often in Japanese craft books? I can only find fake leather with metal rings .
A pillow for my daughter's newly redecorated room.
Simple but a step in the right directions. So far the things that are causing me the most grief are slip stitch and cutting my fabric straight. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for letting me babble. Oh by the way, should i change the name of my blog to scissors paper glue and a little bit of thread???
